Top Data Center Companies Hiring in 2026
Not all data center employers are the same. Hyperscalers pay more but hire slower. Contractors pay OT and per diem. Colos offer stability. Here is who is actively hiring and what each employer is actually like to work for.
Salary snapshot: Varies widely — hyperscaler direct: $80K–$160K | contractor: $52–$70/hr + per diem
Hyperscaler direct-hire: AWS, Microsoft, Google, Meta
The hyperscalers (Amazon/AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Meta) have the largest data center footprints and the most aggressive build programs. They hire directly for both construction oversight and operations roles.
AWS is the largest employer by volume. They run a Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) program and hire globally. Pay is competitive — technician roles start at $58K–$72K, CFE roles at $92K–$118K — but the real benefit is career trajectory. Amazon promotes from within aggressively.
Microsoft is expanding fastest in 2025–2026 with their $80B global build commitment. They are hiring for both construction management and operations roles in NoVA, Phoenix, Atlanta, and internationally. Salaries match or beat Amazon.
Google has some of the best compensation packages in the industry, including robust RSU programs for operations engineer roles. More selective in hiring but worth targeting.
Meta is building large AI training campuses and needs both construction talent (GCs, foremen, commissioning agents) and operations staff. Their direct-hire construction roles are among the highest-paying in the industry.
Colocation providers: Equinix, Digital Realty, QTS, Vantage
Colocation (colo) providers own facilities that they lease to tenants. They run smaller headcounts than hyperscalers per facility, which means more job security and more breadth of work per person.
Equinix is the largest colo operator globally with 250+ data centers. They hire for critical facilities engineer, electrician, and HVAC tech roles. Good benefits and stability. Pay is solid ($74K–$118K for CFE roles) but generally below hyperscaler direct.
Digital Realty is aggressively expanding and hiring across the US. Known for a strong commissioning culture and good training programs.
QTS (now Blackstone-owned) is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and hiring in NoVA, Richmond, and other markets. Commissioning roles are consistently available at $102K–$132K.
Vantage is a private operator with facilities in Phoenix, Portland, and other markets. Smaller headcount per site but good culture and benefits.
Construction contractors: the most roles, fastest hiring
If you want to get into the industry quickly, construction contractors are where to start. They hire constantly because projects constantly start. The work is project-based (6–18 month assignments), but experienced workers stay employed year-round by moving from project to project.
Rosendin Electric is one of the largest electrical contractors in the US and one of the most active on data center builds. They hire IBEW journeymen and apprentices across every major DC market. Strong company culture, ESOP employee ownership model.
Holder Construction and Turner Construction are top-tier general contractors on large DC builds. They hire project engineers, superintendents, foremen, and construction management staff.
M.C. Dean specializes in electrical and technology systems and does an enormous volume of DC work in Northern Virginia and the mid-Atlantic. Strong career ladder from low-voltage installer up to project management.
MYR Group (through their subsidiaries Harlan Electric, Western Pacific Electrical, and others) does major DC electrical construction. Publicly traded, stable employer.
Pike Electric and Quanta Services are both large publicly traded contractors focused on electrical and telecom infrastructure. Quanta is one of the biggest employers of fiber splicers in the country.
How to prioritize your job search
New to the industry: Target construction contractors first. Rosendin, M.C. Dean, and MYR Group hire without a lot of DC-specific experience if you have trades skills. Get in, build credentials, then lateral to operations.
1–2 years experience: Start applying to colo operators (Equinix, Digital Realty) and smaller hyperscaler sites. You now have the safety record, shift experience, and basic skills that make you a competitive candidate.
3+ years experience: Target hyperscaler direct roles (AWS, Microsoft, Google) or commissioning roles. These have the best compensation, benefits, and long-term upside.
Fiber splicers at any level: Quanta Services, MYR Group, and regional fiber contractors are always hiring. Build your reputation with a good W2 contractor, then move to 1099 when the opportunity is right.
